Friendship • Charity • Benevolence
Since 1864, these three principles have defined every Pythian lodge—including Tucson #9.
Friendship
“Faithful to the last.”
The legend of Damon and Pythias teaches that true friendship is tested by sacrifice—not convenience.
Charity
“We serve our communities.”
Charity is not sentiment; it is action on behalf of others.
Benevolence
“Goodwill toward all.”
We seek the welfare of the community, not only our own.
Our Heritage
The Knights of Pythias was founded on February 19, 1864 in Washington, D.C. by Justus H. Rathbone. The order is based on the legendary Greek story of Damon and Pythias, exemplifying perfect friendship and loyalty.
It was the first American fraternal organization to receive a charter from the United States Congress. President Abraham Lincoln praised the order’s principles of Friendship, Charity, and Benevolence.
In Arizona, the Grand Domain was organized in 1884. Tucson Lodge #9 was instituted on May 26, 1888, and remains an active part of the Arizona Pythian community.
